A few days ago I received my paycheck in the mail and inside below all the information there was this disturbing factoid in bold print. Obviously, someone didn’t want us to miss out on this one:
“APPROXIMATELY 150 MILLION HOT DOGS ARE CONSUMED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY”
All I can say is, “Gross and disturbing!” The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has this to say about hot dogs,
“BEWARE: Hot dogs are as bad as cigarettes. That is, eating 50 grams of processed meat per day — about one hot dog — increases your risk of colorectal cancer, on average, by 21 percent.”
Now if the district had added this fact to my paycheck I would really have been impressed!
Further, “A hot dog a day could send you to an early grave,” PCRM nutrition education director Susan Levin, said in a press release. “Processed meats like hot dogs can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and various types of cancer. Like cigarettes, hot dogs should come with a warning label that helps racing fans and other consumers understand the health risk.”
I hope to have made it clear that,
HOT DOGS + Fourth of July does not equal a celebration!
Wishing you all a Healthy & Happy Fourth of July!
