A Fourth Grader Takes on School Lunches


Zachary Maxwell, a fourth grader, recently came out with a documentary called “YUCK”. He went undercover at his school and made the film together with his father. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it yet, but I’d like to! I have watched a couple of short clips about it. I will refrain from saying too much about this particular issue because I work “in the system”, but I ponder how we expect students to succeed, meet standardized tests and compete with other countries when we  are failing in major ways by feeding them a diet high in sugar, fat, salt and grease? Plus meat laden with pink slime, that wouldn’t be fit for dog food? Food for the growing brain or food for future diseases?

Yes, there are salad bars available and they are great with the exception of the fattening & artery clogging Ranch dressings that many children soak their food in. They’ll literally pump and fill a whole section of their lunch tray with this stuff! Seriously, how many children, without proper knowledge and direction, do you know who can say no to a large slice of cheese pizza or a burger? Some would say, “Well, at least they’re getting something to eat!” That’s true! We have so many children in this country who don’t get proper nutritional care at home. In my opinion it comes down to not only educating the public, parents, and students about healthful eating,  but also about government support [$$$] for healthy eating for this country’s future citizens, so we can reverse this extremely negative health path that we are currently on!

Further, I wonder if this system isn’t setting them up for future heart disease, diabetes, obesity and various types of cancers? From the research I have been doing on various types of cancers, some point to that they start developing  as early as when we are in our teens.
