A System of Abuse – Factory Farms

This morning, I was struck by this powerful quote that came from the most unlikely source,

“The vast majority of our food animals are now raised under methods that are systematically abusive. For them, discomfort is the norm, pain is routine, growth is abnormal, and diet is unnatural. Disease is widespread and stress is almost constant.”

Peter Singer writes, “Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is the author of The River Cottage Meat Book – a large, glossy book devoted to the cooking and eating of meat.” Yet this is what he wrote! However in England laws protecting the animals are much stricter than in the United States. The thing is, I don’t think you can become a vegan, plant-based vegan or go on a plant-based diet without at some point having to look at and realize what you’ve been eating and taking part of. At least that has been my own personal experience. I went from not thinking much about it to feeling it intensely in my heart and gut that THIS is so very wrong! By “this” I mean Factory Farming and eating animals.

I am almost done reading Peter Singer & Jim Mason’s powerful book, “The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter”. It has truly been enlightening and I’d highly recommend it. First I got it in audio format through my local library, but it was so good that I had to order a copy of it and am now sitting with the book here on my lap. The way we eat truly does matter not just for our bodies and overall health, but to the animals as well!

One last note, if you choose to believe that I’m blowing smoke about Factory farming being a system of abuse, then please do me a favor and watch “Meet Your Meat” by PETA and/or “Earthlings“. Also, do not fall for people who claim that “organic” and/or “free range” means that the animals necessarily have it any better. This can be extremely misleading and downright false! Trust me, I wouldn’t be telling you this if it wasn’t the case. Think about it: I’m not here to sell you something or give you false information! The truth can be hard to swallow, but not as difficult as knowing that you’re buying pain, stress and needless suffering!
